1 Timothy 3:1-7 is all about sound leadership in the church. Sound leadership concerns sound doctrine and sound living. Sound leaders are called to instruct God’s people in sound doctrine and to further exemplify sound living. Overseers are to constantly be at work saying to God’s people, “Listen to what the Word says” and “Follow me as I follow Christ.” It is imperative that God’s church be committed to praying for those responsible for shepherding the sheep. Use 1 Timothy 3:1-7 as a guide.

Today we will be looking at the sovereignty of God. This sweet doctrine has personally carried our family through trials and tragedy. We praise the One who is in control, and take great comfort in knowing that the One who is sovereign is also revealed as all good, all wise, all powerful, and most worthy in His Word! I pray that the Lord would cause the truth of this doctrine to be planted deep into our hearts today, and that we would join together to praise the sovereign Lord of the universe! May our hearts be in awe of the Apostle Paul’s words in Colossians 1:16: For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things were created through him and for him.

Parenting can be difficult! One day we may see it as a privilege, and the next as a pain. How has the gospel affected the way you view and do parenting? What is the purpose of parenting? Proverbs 22:6 reads, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” As followers of Jesus, our goal is to train our children in the way of the Lord. This training doesn’t just happen. We must be intentional here and do it with the goal of seeing our children walking with the Lord. If we have received the gospel we must be committed to giving it to our children and praying that the Spirit would apply it to their hearts. It is my prayer that the gospel would challenge and transform the way we view and do parenting. Parents, be committed to praying for your children and one another, namely that the Word would guide how we think about and do parenting. Lastly, may all of us be encouraged by Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 3:6 where he writes, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.” Parents, let us be found faithful in planting and watering–sowing gospel seeds in the lives of our children and praying–and trusting God to give the growth.

What does it look like to put our praise (as believers) into practice? According to 1 Peter 1:13-21 it concerns a new way of thinking and a new way of living. As we saw last week in 1 Peter 1:3-12, the believer in Christ has so much to be thankful for as it relates to God’s wonderful work of salvation on behalf of His people. We must understand praise as the believer’s primary objective. God made mankind to praise Him, and He has remade His people to praise Him. God’s people have been born again to do this! What we learn in our passage is that praise concerns more than just our Sunday morning gathering, but applies to a new way of life in Christ. We have been saved to praise God and this is to be seen in bringing our thoughts in line with Christ and His promises and aligning our actions with Him. May God’s people at MCC be marked by holy thoughts and holy works for the glory of God! Praise God for the Holy Spirit who gives us new minds and new power for holy living so that we can practice our praise!

In Philippians 2:1-11, Paul continues to hold up unity as the goal to be pursued by God’s church. However, Paul doesn’t simply provide the Philippians with a call to action. He points them both to the means and the example. Both are found in Christ! Praise God that in Christ we have the power to walk in unity and humility! Praise God that in Christ we have the ultimate example of unity and humility. May we as a church constantly be found pointing one another to Christ, His power and example, so that we as a church can live as citizens of heaven in a manner worthy of the gospel!

Paul begins our passage today (1 Timothy 5:1-16) by using family language to describe the relationships within the church of Ephesus. One of Paul’s favorite metaphors for describing the church is the church as a family. This metaphor assumes relational commitment within the family of God. When the church functions as a family, it’s a beautiful thing to behold. It affirms and validates the gospel of Jesus Christ before the world-the gospel message that when appropriated by faith brings sinners into the family of God, transforming us into children of God and brothers and sisters in Christ. Do you view the church as a family? What type of “family” things are you currently doing with the church? Are you willing to commit to the church family by becoming a member?

How would you respond to someone who asks you, “What is the Bible about?” Have you ever thought about this question? Do you tend to think about the Bible as one big story or as a collection of multiple books, unrelated and intended to be studied on their own? The Bible tells one big story, the story of God’s mission to rescue His people through Jesus Christ. Every part of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, tells this story. The major theme that helps us to make sense of the Bible’s big message is the Kingdom of God. From Kingdom abandoned to Kingdom perfected, the Bible tells the incredible story of a King who leaves His throne to rescue His people. The irony is that this rescue comes through the death of the King. The King lays down His life to win His people back. There is no other story like this, and it’s true. It’s a story that demands our attention, a story that invites us in, a story that the Holy Spirit works through to bring us under the saving rule of this King for His glory and our deepest joy. Those who know the story are called to tell the story to others, so that more and more people may be brought under the saving rule of King Jesus by repenting from sin and trusting in the King!
