Big Idea: The sovereignty of God grounds our trust, influences our prayers and calls us to obey!

The Sovereignty of God defined:

  • God does what He _____!
  • What God does is ______ and for His ______!

See Psalm 115:3; Psalm 33:10-11; Isaiah 46:9-10; Job 42:2

  • First, what does the Bible teach us about the One who is sovereign?
  • God is all ______!

See 1 Chronicles 16:34; Psalm 25:8; Psalm 34:8; Psalm 119:68

  • God is all ______!

See Proverbs 3:19; Job 9:4; Job 12:13; Romans 8:28

  • God is all ___________!

See Jeremiah 32:17; Jeremiah 32:27; Romans 1:20; Colossians 1:16

  • God intends to be __________!

See Isaiah 42:8

See 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

  • What is the appropriate response to the sovereignty of God?
  • _______ the Lord!

See Luke 22:41-44

  • _______ to the Lord!

The doctrine of the sovereignty of God affects both how we pray and what we pray.

  • First, the sovereignty of God moves us to _______ God!

See James 1:17; Job 1:21; Psalm 13:1-2, 5

  • Second, the doctrine of the sovereignty of God moves us to pray God’s ______ be done.

See Matthew 6:9-10

  • _______ the Lord!

How do we square evil, suffering and death with the sovereignty of God?

See Genesis 50:19-20; Acts 2:23

Discussion Questions:

1. Where do you turn when tragedy and disappointment hit?  Why?

2. How would you define the sovereignty of God?  Read Psalm 135:5-7; Psalm 115:3; Psalm 33:10-11; Isaiah 46:9-10; Job 42:2.  Why is this doctrine so important?

3. Why must the sovereignty of God be read alongside other attributes of God?  What are some of the other attributes of God we should take into account when talking about His sovereignty?  Based on what you know about God (as revealed in His Word), do you find the sovereignty of God comforting or terrifying?

 4. What is the appropriate response to the sovereignty of God?  How should this doctrine affect the Christian life?  Give several examples.

5. How do we square evil, suffering and death with the sovereignty of God?

6. Describe a time in your own life when the doctrine of the sovereignty of God brought you peace and comfort?

7. How might you use this doctrine to encourage a fellow believer who is currently suffering?
